Targeted release of trigger points
Treatment with manual trigger point therapy
Did you know that?
Trigger points: often the hidden cause of pain
Much chronic pain in the back, neck or shoulders is not caused by structural damage, but by overstimulated areas of muscle: so-called trigger points. We treat these specifically using manual techniques.
What is a trigger point?
A trigger point is a locally oversensitised area within a muscle that causes pain either at the site itself or radiating to distant parts of the body. It is caused by overexertion, poor posture, stress or following injuries. Applying targeted pressure can release the trigger point, thereby reducing the pain.
When the pain just won’t go away
Patients from Dübendorf, Stettbach and Schwamendingen come to us with persistent muscle tension, neck pain or radiating pain. Many are at their wits’ end, as no other treatment has helped so far. Trigger point therapy can be effective where general treatments are not enough.
Treating trigger points at their source
Much pain is caused by overstimulated muscle areas, not by structural damage. We locate the trigger points and release them in a targeted manner, providing noticeable and lasting relief.
We specialise in manual trigger point therapy: targeted treatment of overstrained muscles
What treat What exactly do you mean?
Typical conditions within our range of treatments:
- Chronic neck and back tension
- Radiating pain in the arms or legs
- Tension-type headaches of muscular origin
- Shoulder pain and restricted mobility
- Tension in the jaw muscles associated with TMD
An assessment provides clarity
Not all pain is caused by a trigger point. A thorough assessment will reveal whether any muscles are involved, and if so which ones, and will determine the course of treatment.
Trigger point therapy or dry needling?
Both methods target trigger points, but differ in the technique used. In manual therapy, targeted pressure is applied to the trigger point using the thumb or fingers. Dry needling involves the use of a fine needle, which can also reach deep-seated points. Vasileios Papaioannou will decide which method is right for you based on the findings; often, both are combined.
Targeted relief for persistent muscle pain
Using targeted trigger point therapy, we relieve overstimulated muscle areas and provide long-lasting relief from persistent pain, tension and restricted movement.

FAQ: Manual trigger point therapy
What exactly is a trigger point, and how does it develop?
A trigger point is an overstimulated, hardened area within a muscle that causes localised or radiating pain. It develops as a result of overuse, one-sided strain, stress or following injuries. Typically, applying pressure to the point reproduces the familiar pain, which helps us to diagnose the condition.
Does the treatment hurt?
Pressure applied to an active trigger point is noticeable and may briefly intensify the familiar pain. This is to be expected and is normal. Once the trigger point has been released, the pain usually subsides quickly. Some patients feel immediate relief, whilst others only notice a difference in the hours that follow.
How many sessions are needed?
That depends on how long the symptoms have been present and how many muscles are affected. Recent tension often eases after two to four sessions. Chronic, deep-seated trigger points take longer to resolve and usually require a combination of active exercises. Following the initial assessment, we will provide you with a realistic prognosis.
Is trigger point therapy the same as a massage?
No. A classic massage works over the surface of the muscles and promotes relaxation and blood circulation. Trigger point therapy is specific: we specifically search for the overstimulated points, locate them through palpation and treat them precisely there. The approach is based on the findings, not on general relaxation.
