Effective methods

Malfunction in the Temporomandibular joint

Jaw pain, teeth grinding, clicking noises when opening the mouth, head or neck pain, difficulty swallowing: these are typical signs of craniomandibular dysfunction (CMD). This dysfunction of the temporomandibular joint is often underestimated. Physiotherapist and PhysioKinex founder Vasileios Papaioannou has specialised specifically in this field.

CMD: It’s the overall picture that counts

TMJ disorder does not only affect the temporomandibular joint itself. It often involves a complex interplay between muscles, joints, the cervical spine and the nervous system. A one-sided approach to treatment is often insufficient. At PhysioKinex, we therefore always take a holistic view.

When a dental splint alone doesn’t help

Many patients from Schwamendingen and Stettbach come to us after other forms of treatment, such as dental splints, have only provided partial relief. The jaw physiotherapy we offer here in Dübendorf effectively complements dental treatments and addresses the musculo-fascial causes.

Typical treatment methods for CMD:

Bruxism: more than just stress

Bruxism, or teeth grinding, is often linked to stress, but that is not the only cause. The muscular strain can be treated physically, regardless of the psychological component. A realistic treatment goal is to achieve significant relief from the symptoms.

FAQ: Jaw Physiotherapy & TMD

CMD stands for craniomandibular dysfunction, a functional disorder of the temporomandibular joint and the surrounding structures. It is often caused by muscle strain, stress, misalignment or injury. Typical symptoms include jaw pain, clicking sounds, teeth grinding and headaches. Early treatment is almost always easier than dealing with chronic CMD.
Vasileios Papaioannou uses manual techniques to treat the temporomandibular joint and the masticatory muscles directly. Depending on the findings, this is supplemented by dry needling, treatment of the cervical spine, relaxation exercises and patient education. It is important that we look not only at the symptoms, but also at the underlying cause.
Yes, often very effectively indeed. A dental splint protects the teeth from wear and can relieve pressure on the jaw, but it does not treat the muscles and joints that are causing the symptoms. Jaw physiotherapy is a useful complement to dental treatments. We also work in collaboration with your dentist or orthodontist where necessary.
It varies from person to person. Acute symptoms often respond to treatment within a few sessions. Chronic CMD symptoms that have persisted for years require longer-term treatment and active self-management. Following the initial assessment, we will provide you with a realistic prognosis.
